Air Conditioner Buying Guide: Tips on buying the best air conditioner
By Samsung
With air conditioning, it’s possible to experience the bliss of sprawling in front of the cold air on a sweltering day. On a hot summer’s evening, you can have a cool night’s sleep, and the whole family will be able to relax without sweating.
Our guide will help you to navigate the options and find the best air conditioner for your home.
1. Choose your type of air conditioner
Whether you work from a home office, or require the whole house or just one room to be cool, you want the right type of air conditioner for your needs. Split air conditioners are quiet, look stylish and provide great air distribution. They cool rooms and open plan areas of up to 60 square metres.
2. Sleep easy, without being too cold
A good night’s sleep can make the difference between a productive day and a horrible one. Samsung’s Good Sleep Mode feature is designed to create comfortable temperatures throughout the night so the whole family rests easy. For example, you don’t want to get too cold at night when the air conditioner is operating, so automatically raising the temperature slightly at night when everyone is asleep and already cooled helps keep you comfortable at night.
3. Capacity – cool your home fast, far and wide
The right air conditioner for your home depends on many factors, including room size, insulation, size of windows, house orientation and time of year. Samsung offers an intelligent triangular design to help the air conditioner take in and give out lots of air, providing powerful performance that cools your home fast, far and wide.
4. Inverter technology
Samsung’s digital air conditioners with inverter technology are a smart choice. Inverter air conditioners constantly alter fan and motor speeds to help maintain the optimum.
5. Smart machines
Now you have the freedom to move around and still monitor the cooling. When connected to your in house Wi-Fi network, Samsung’s air conditioner apps help you to manage and monitor an air conditioner’s status and a range of settings, including the timer and the off button from your compatible device 1. Adjust the temperature of any room from almost anywhere in the home (or outside where there’s connectivity). These apps can also text you if there is a simple error, or when it’s time to clean the filter.
Samsung offers sensors that detect whether anyone is in the room, so the unit knows whether to keep working or not.
Air Conditioners
Air conditioners typically cool air through a process that replaces hot air in a room with cooler air that has passed through the refrigeration cycle. The refrigerant absorbs and removes heat from the space and expels it outside.
Split system: The cooling unit is installed outside with the heated unit (fans) mounted inside. A split system air conditioner is suited to cooling one or more adjoining rooms.
Inverter system: Constantly alters fan and motor speeds. This enables faster cooling of a room, and the inverter air conditioner does not have to switch itself on and off to maintain a constant temperature.
Portable air conditioner: Small, light and mobile, the portable air conditioner is movable from room to room. Portable units have a lower power output (than a split system), and suited to smaller spaces such as apartments and where permenant installation is not permitted.
It is important to match the air conditioning unit to the size of the room it is cooling. The bigger the room, the more cooling capacity and power input required. Under-powered air conditioners will have to work harder, wasting energy.
Energy efficiency for air conditioners is measured by capacity output in relation to power input. The ratio of power to cooling and heating capacity to achieve determines the energy efficiency of the system. Often energy efficiency decreases between similar models as cooling capacity increases. The compact size of air conditioning units come at the cost of energy efficiency.
